Finally, after much uncertainty, it’s legal to travel again. The highly anticipated list of UK Government-approved countries for international leisure travel is finally here, and we’ve put the most sought after spots on your radar. As from July 19, dreamt-of destinations require no quarantine on return to the UK if you have been doubled-vaccinated. We have done the research for you and will continue to do so, so that getting back up into the air and off to the beach or out on safari can finally be reality.
What is the travel green list?
On May 17, international travel returned with a new traffic light system based on Covid-19 risk levels and number of cases, with each travel destination given a status of green, amber of red. For those travelling to green list countries and are doubled vaccinated will not have to quarantine on their return to the UK.
What about the green watchlist?
The countries on the green watchlist identify those countries most at risk of moving on to the amber list. It is highly likely that the countries on the green list will continue to change. The UK Government reviews this list every three weeks, and is based on the country’s Covid cases. Please be aware before booking your holiday that the UK government will not hesitate to act immediately should the data show a high risk. It is more important than ever to keep up to date with the list of green countries and the rules. For now, it would be sensible to book a flexible policy and investing in travel insurance with specific Covid cover for that extra peace of mind on your luxury getaway.
So where can you go on holiday?
Following the latest government update, there is now a wider choice of countries for quarantine free summer travel. Here is a pick of luxury trips to consider now, whether that is an escape to Malta, Madeira, the Balearics and Barbados… or to take time out in Antiqua, Iceland, Israel and Croatia. There are also tips on finding a weeks-worth or more of heaven at home in the UK…
Malta – a historic jewel in the midst of the Mediterranean
Malta is a convenient 3-hour flight from the UK and is the perfect destination for a break in the Mediterranean sun. Steeped in history and culture – Malta has something for everyone.
Despite Malta’s small size, it has it all. Perfect for anyone who appreciates medieval history, culture, architecture, crystal-clear water and fresh sea food. Malta’s climate sees little else but sunshine from April to October, usually accompanied with a cool sea breeze. Malta is made up of several small islands, with plenty to keep everyone occupied. The main island and its capital Valetta is bustling with life, as well as steeped in history. Gozo, Malta’s sister island is a charming island only a short ferry ride away from Malta itself – it offers superb scenery with fine coastal walks and good swimming spots in secluded bays. It is also regarded as one of Europe’s finest diving locations sporting excellent diving opportunities and facilities. Gozo is home to the Ggantija Temples, which are thought to predate Stonehenge and even the Pyramids in age and are considered the oldest free-standing stone structures in the world. For any archaeology buffs, this one’s for you!
The tiny island of Comino is home to The Blue Lagoon. One of the Mediterranean’s finest swimming spots, the aptly coloured water is perfect for snorkelling, exploring and just being in the moment.
Barbados – the Caribbean at its absolute finest
From idyllic, white beaches to exciting Bajan culture Barbados offers a luxury holiday like no other. One of the most popular Caribbean islands, it retains a distinct character – with its wonderfully laid-back, relaxed atmosphere – it’s undoubtedly West Indian. It is the brilliant beaches and sheer variety of attractions that set this idyllic island apart from the others.
The fabulous coast offers a chance to dive, snorkel, swim, kite surf or relax on the sand. Carlisle Bay, near the capital Georgetown is home to superb diving with some 200 wrecks waiting to be explored. Heading inland and discovering Bajan culture gives an insight into the inherent Barbados culture and its rich history.
Antigua & Barbuda – home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world
There’s a distinctly English flavour to this Caribbean favourite, its colonial past showcased in the bustling capital, St John’s, a well as across numerous old forts and historical highlights, which dot a dreamy coastline and verdant interior.
Antigua’s is delightfully quiet and laid-back, in true spirit of the West Indies. This maybe in part due to the extensive number of beaches dotted along its shoreline. Indeed, it is said one could spend each day of a year on a different beach. All in all, if you’re after some old-fashioned, no-nonsense peace and quiet Antigua should be top of your list. There’s plenty to do, from exploring colonial mills and forts such as Nelson’s Dockyard and Fort James, enjoying a game of cricket, tasting local rum as well as the truly delicious traditional food.
Iceland – every inch of this country is stunning
Icelandic holidays literally burst with natural attractions: active volcanoes, geysers and thermal pools hint at the explosive force of mother nature here; great glaciers continue to carve and sculpt the dramatic landscape; and the extraordinary spectacle of Northern Lights create a surreal show in the skies.
Reykjavik is a cultural powerhouse with art galleries, museums and a coffee culture, said to be unrivalled. At night, the city morphs into a vibrant, bustling music scene, while the locals maintain a tradition of the runtur, the legendary Icelandic pub crawl.
The main sights include a tour of the Golden Circle, encompassing the pools of Geysir, the giant double waterfall of Gulfoss and the rugged rift valley at Pingvellir, site of the Althing, Iceland’s ancient parliament.
The more adventurous should travel to Europe’s most westerly point, cruise to the Westman Islands and also trek on Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest ice cap.
Israel – a country steeped in culture and history
Vibrant and forward-thinking, but with one foot rooted firmly in a truly fascinating past, Israel is a country that unassumingly defies expectations. From the ancient wonders of Jerusalem to the vineyards of Galilee and the beaches of Tel Aviv – Israel truly seems to have it all.
Home to sites of unmatched religious, cultural and historical significance – Nazareth, Bethlehem and Jericho, the oldest continually inhabited city on Earth. Whilst, Tel Aviv is a diverse cultural mix, home to galleries, hipster cafes, nightlife and some of the best beaches in the Middle East. The northern city of Haifa celebrates spectacular coastal views and beautiful Baha’i Gardens.
The port of Eilat on the Red Sea has glorious coral reefs and fine beaches and is perfect for diving, swimming, windsurfing and water-skiing. The Dead Sea caters to those tourists interested in its health and beauty benefits and the chance to float on its infamous salt-rich waters.
Whilst many of us choose cities and coastal resorts, don’t overlook inland Israel. Explore the Negev Desert by camel or travel to Wadi Qelt, to explore the ancient monastery of St George of Koziba. The south brings the spectacular Roman site of Masada Palace, home to immense fortifications and the site of King Herod’s Palace, built on a vast plateau with views stretching across the desert to the Dead Sea.
Croatia
A beautiful and diverse country, rich in history, culture and awe-inspiring medieval architecture (Games of Thrones fans rejoice!)
In recent years, Croatia has hugely gained in popularity – from wooded hills, traditional villages and idyllic islands to walled medieval cities and Roman ruins. Young, fun and exotic – Croatia fuses the best of Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean into one new whole.
Croatia is made up of 1,778km of coastline and 1,000 islands. History, culture and landscape collide with clear blue waters and rocky caves. A Croatia holiday is also great for hiking through forests, mountains and waterfalls. The towns of Dubrovnik and Zagreb are inundated with great historical architecture and art galleries. Sparkling blue waters lap against rocky caves, picturesque ports bustle with fisherman, and scrumptious sea food served in local restaurants. Inland the scenery is equally enchanting – made up forests, mountains and waterfalls. A great place for hiking, or simply relaxing and soaking up the natural surroundings.
Last on this list, not by no means least… staying home to explore the United Kingdom is as diverse and historically rich as any of the other holiday spots mentioned here.
